Beyond Isolation: Rethinking Senior Housing
The Beyond Isolation: Senior Housing competition invited architects and designers worldwide to reimagine what it means to grow older — not in seclusion, but in connection. As populations age, too many older adults still face loneliness, limited mobility, and a loss of social fabric. This challenge called for ideas that blend architecture, community, and care into environments that empower people to thrive at every stage of life.
Participants were asked to select any site and envision models of housing that foster interaction, physical activity, and belonging — integrating retail, recreation, and shared spaces into the broader neighborhood rather than separating seniors from it. The goal: to move beyond facilities and toward connected, life-centered communities.
The winning entries, announced in February 2024, highlight how design can transform aging into an experience of engagement and dignity. Their work reinforces a growing shift across the industry — one that aligns with the mission of Sectour: advancing innovation in longevity, wellness, and place-based living.
